My family has done cheaper than $50 a week for groceries for years. We had a budget of $100 a month for a family of 6. It helps that I am a stay home mom. We plant a large garden every year, and we planted fruit trees over the years and have a lot of raspberries/blackberries bushes and grapes. We do lots of canning yearly. We go everything from Meats, veggies, fruits, jams & jellies and all kinds of tomatoes items like salsa sloppy joe mix, stewed, juice, spaghetti sauce. We recently purchased a large dehydrator and do things like bananas, beef jerky. One of the main items we do buy is potatoes and onions . In the fall we can buy 50 lbs bags for under $10 so we usually get a couple. We also pick up a 50 lbs bag of onions for a couple dollars more. If the potatoes/onions appear to get slightly soft I will either dehydrate them. We have also buy a huge bag of flour a couple times a year. So most of the money we spend the rest of the time is for milk, butter, bread (when we don't make it)pasta and greens and things like dressings and spices and chicken. Eggs are usually given to us. I should point out that most of the meat we have is venison and my spouse goes hunting every fall and we have family members who hunt but don't want all the meat so they give it to us.
