Yes, any containers with food remnants must be washed before recycling because it can contaminate the whole binload, rendering the whole load unrecyclable! For peanut butter/Nutella jars I usually fill it with some
soapy dishwater and let it sit for 1-2 days before giving it a good shake and quick rinse.
