Yes you have to be discreet. It also depends on how strict the staff wants to be.

I did not know this, but I was advised this on friday by a NEL staff, it seems it is prohibited to pass items over the fare gate at train stations, ie when each party is on either side of the fare gate, and a fine of ? $150 can be imposed!

The correct way is for the 2 person to be on the same side of the fare gate. The staff did mention that if has to be done, do it away from the control station, out of sight of the staff! Not sure if this is only for NEL or SMRT also, any fellow recyclers have further info on this?
