Hi All,
I'm looking to start some new initiative: Getting any working windows (win 7 and above) laptop for the purpose of refurbishing and lending it long-term for free. Recipients will be sourced from passiton.org as they've already been shortlisted. If you have one to donate, kindly email me.
Things I'll do with it:
- Erase the laptop of any personal data
- Zerorize deleted files so that there is no trace of your deleted data that can be recovered
- Perform a clean up and refurbishment as necessary, for both hardware and software
- Perform the necessary windows updates- Email social worker to propose the lending (and cc you in the loop just so you know I'm not doing anything else with it)
- Perform the drop off at the specified date
General idea: Most people, including the recipients, will deem their laptop as 'too old' or 'too slow' after say... 3-4 years and will discard it or upgrade to a new laptop. However, if there was some IT geek (yep, that's my bread-and-butter) to maintain them, these laptops can possibly "go a few rounds" of usage so to speak, rather than letting it die an early death or hibernate on a shelf.
Potential solution:
- Set up a "Laptop Library" of sorts (just like a book library) where recipients will borrow a laptop long-term.
- When recipients are done with the borrowed laptop (be it an upgrade, or laptop spoilt) they return it
- I refresh, and/or repair the returned laptop.
- The laptop goes for another round of lending again and again until the point it can no longer function.
- If laptop is truly, truly dead and not worth repairing, it will be sold as scrap, and funds will go into financing yet another second hand laptop (and if you like and don't mind my spamming, I will also cc you in the loop so you know your donated laptop has transformed into another laptop)
Random thoughts:
- I have not thought deeply about windows 7 laptops when they EOL in Jan 2020. Will address it when the time comes...
- If this initiative does not take off, it will be given away to the recipient instead of being lent. That being said, I'm not going down without a solid try.
Best regards,
Kevin
P.S. Special thanks to those who have previously donated your laptop thus far. You know who you are =) God bless you!
