I use peroxide to get stains out of my underwear, so I guess it could work as a whitening agent too. Never used it for socks though. I'm not a bleach fan at all, and peroxide seems to have some of that oxygen bleaching effect we want without all the negatives of bleach. I also use peroxide twice a week in my mouth as a rinse after brushing with toothpaste and baking soda. Kills bacteria and freshens mouth cheaply. And I just got an A+ at the dentist last week.
I actually soak my work t-shirts in somewhat diluted vinegar overnight, then throw in wash the next day after wringing well. It brightens the flourescent green color and controls sweat stains and odors. I don't mean I smell bad, but I do sweat a lot and that combined with clear gel antiperspirants and deodorants causes those crazy sweat stains occasionally in thin materials like t-shirts. Men get those a lot when they work outdoors and sweat a lot. And my shirts never smell like vinegar. Very handy.
Oh, I just noticed the following recipe is almost like the recipe my friend used to get rid of pet odors in her carpet. She used 2 cups water, 1/2 cup peroxide, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent. She shook it up, sprayed on carpet, and the next day she borrowed my carpet steam cleaner. Odors gone. I suggest as with all things you test an inconspicuous area first. I wonder if t his would work on clothes too? LOL
