I use my own laundry detergent too... I make mine with Zote which has brighteners in it. I tend to group my whites together, use hot water, the detergent and put a scoop of oxyclean (if really dingy/dirty) I then let soak over nite and run thru. I use white vinegar in the rinse and have never had a problem with the smell. The clothes seem softer as the vinegar gets rid of any lingering soap scum.
